How to Play Reverdle 🔄
The Reverse Challenge!
Objective: AVOID guessing the secret 5-letter word in 6 tries. You win if you make 6 valid guesses and none of them are the secret word (this is an "Ideal Loss"). You lose if you guess the secret word.
Guessing:
- Enter any valid 5-letter word using the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard.
- Press Enter or click the Submit button to submit your guess.
Feedback (Color Tiles):
Interpret the feedback with your reverse goal in mind!
- 🟩 Green: The letter is in the secret word AND in the correct spot. (This is bad for you in Reverdle, as it gets you closer to guessing the word!)
- 🟨 Yellow: The letter is in the secret word BUT in the wrong spot. (Also bad for you, but gives clues about letters to potentially avoid or reposition if forced to use them).
- ⬜ Gray: The letter is NOT in the secret word at all. (This is good for you! These are safe letters to use in future guesses to fill spots without risk).
Constraints:
The game will enforce Wordle-like constraints based on feedback, making your task to avoid the word challenging:
- Green letters must be used in the same spot in subsequent guesses.
- Yellow letters must be used, but not in the spot where they were yellow.
- Gray letters cannot be used again.
Winning & Losing:
- Win (Ideal Loss 🎉): Make 6 valid guesses without finding the secret word. This is the ultimate goal and contributes to your Ideal Streak!
- Lose (Guessed Word 😞): You accidentally guess the secret word.
- Give Up 💔: You can choose to "Give Up!" at any time to reveal the word. This ends the current game and resets any active Ideal Streak.
Hint Button 💡:
- Use the 'Get Hint' button once per game for a clue about the secret word. Use this information strategically to help you *avoid* the word.
Strategies to Succeed 🏆
How to be a Master Avoider!
- Embrace the Gray: Your best friends are gray letters. Try to discover as many as possible early on. Use words with diverse, common letters in your initial guesses to rule out large parts of the alphabet.
- Strategic Use of Yellows/Greens (The Necessary Evils):
- When you get a green or yellow letter, you're forced to use it. This is where the challenge lies.
- Try to place these "forced" letters in ways that fulfill the constraints but are unlikely to form the actual secret word.
- If you have a green letter, that spot is fixed. For remaining spots, prioritize using known gray letters.
- If you have yellow letters, you must use them in different positions. Try to "hide" them amongst gray letters or in less common word structures.
- Think About Common vs. Uncommon Words:
- The secret word is likely a common English word.
- To avoid it, your guesses (while still being valid words) might need to become progressively more obscure or use letter combinations that are less typical, especially when you're forced to use green/yellow letters.
- The "Ideal Loss" is the Goal: Remember, using all 6 turns and *not* guessing the word is the perfect game. Don't be afraid to make guesses that seem "bad" in traditional Wordle if they help you avoid the target word while satisfying constraints.
- Use the Hint Wisely: The "Get Hint" button can give you a clue. In Reverdle, a hint might tell you a letter that *is* in the word. Use this information to try and *avoid* using that letter if possible, or to satisfy constraints carefully if it's a new green/yellow.
- Don't Give Up (Too Easily)! The best scores and the coveted "Ideal Loss" come from playing all 6 rounds. Giving up early is the least desirable outcome for your stats.
